You know when a hooved animal has a name like ‘Sweetie’ or ‘Pumpkin,’ they are going to be a real witch. And our girl Sugar is no exception. She has been the herd queen since Katie retired to Choclate Flower Farm and has ruled with an iron hoof ever since she ascended to queendom. But, as serious as she takes her job keeping everyone in line, she has always taken milking very seriously as well. She banged the barn door off its hinges one morning when she felt she had waited long enough for milking to commence. She has been a steady eddie for us, not the flashiest doe or top producer but she is one of the only does with our herdname to test at 6.0lbs and her components have been above average for our management.

3rd lactation - 139 DIM - 660# - 40# BF - 26# Protein

2nd - 505 DIM - 1120# at 305 DIM (1576# total) - 58 - 46

1st - 274 DIM - 920# - 56 - 41

We hit pay dirt with Loretta and she has been the standard to which the rest of our milkers are held. She has a strong will-to-milk, milking through two different fire evacuations and sustaining a 500+ day lactation without dipping under 2lbs on any test. She set the template for our once-a-day milkers with a capacious udder that can comfortably hold 24 hours of milk. While Loretta has a lovely broad head, that width doesn’t carry through to her body until you hit her udder. She’s narrower through the chest than we’d prefer and a bit loose in the shoulders. Though, while her rump is steep, she has fast, smooth kiddings, preferring to deliver her kiddos from a standing, just chillin’, position. She maintains condition despite putting so much into the jar and has healthy boundaries with her kids and weans them in a business-like fashion. She is a quiet, low maintenance doe and doesn’t need her head locked into the stanchion to stay on the stand while she’s milked. We don’t care that Loretta won’t win any blue ribbons in the show ring or score a 90 at appraisal. We’d take a dozen of her in a heartbeat.

Betty isn’t as productive on the milkstand as some of our other does, but she is one of the most well put-together and pleasing to look at does in our herd. She is a smoothly blended, dairy doe that ends in a wide chonky rump. She has been underutilized (like most of our does), but from muzzle to shoulder to mammary, she is consistent and correct.

Yeah, we should have used her a bit more :)

1st lactation - 350 DIM - 820# (@ 305) - 56# BF - 40# Protein

Bluejay is a powerhouse combo of two of my all time favorite herds. She has a lovely head and correct front end with a capcious and well attached mammary with well sized teats and a smooth foreudder. Her rump maybe missed it’s calling as a ski slope and is her primary fault, though, like her paternal half sister, Loretta, her kiddings have been smooth and efficient. She is currently in the 93rd percentil for production.

1st lactation - 153 DIM - 400# - 27# BF - 18# Protein

Punisher is a beautiful doe with the Redstone buckskin stamp. Due to a chaotic 2025, she didn’t get the effort she was due for her first lactation but please stay turned for updated pictures from her second lactation. She is a cheery little doe with a friendly disposition. Her length is well supported by a frame that manages to tip just right towards strengths without sacrificing her begrudging feminity. She also has one of the most pleasant faces of the crew.

3rd - 273 - 670 - 45 - 31

4th - 335 - 910 (at 305 days) - 49 - 37

Rowdy is the doe who helped get our onece-a-day milking genetics off the ground. She has excellent udder texture and orifice size, milking out quickly and completely. She is also quiet to the point that I don’t recognize her voice when I hear it. She has a wide head, strong muzzle and pleasing overall balance. But, her chill demeanor and ease on the milkstand is what makes Rowdy such an easy doe to have around for 11 years and counting.
